Azerbaijan![]() Quick Overview: Azerbaijan is the most multinational country among the countries of southern Caucasus. Its area is 86,6 thousand km2. The population number 8 million people. 45 million Azerbaijanis live in 56 states of the world. Out of them 30 million Azerbaijanis live in Iran and 12 millions men live in southern Azerbaijan. In the first half of XIX century in the quantity and composition of population of Azerbaijan the changes occurred after the forcible annexation of this country to the Russian Empire. From 1863 till 1913 the number of population of Azerbaijan increased twice and reached 2,3 millions people. In 1914-1920 in the result of First World War and provocative actions of Bolsheviks and Dashnaks led by Shaumyan massacres and pogroms were organized against Azerbaijanis in Karabakh, Shamakhi and Kuba. Subsequently the number of population decreased on 400 thousand men. From 1920 till 1991 over millions people were subjected to repression, shot and deported. In the period of 1941-1945 over 300 thousand Azerbaijanis perished in the fronts of Second World War Geography: Azerbaijan is one of the most ancient cradles of global civilization. Its historic boundaries encompassed the eastern part of the South Caucasus and the northwestern regions of Iran. The surveys of the Guruchay archaeological culture, which was doubtless the most ancient in the whole expanse of the former Soviet Union territory and is analogous to the Olduwai culture in Africa, confirm that the territory of Azerbaijan was within the zone where the humanity emerged. In the Azikh cavern located on the left bank of River Guruchay the fragment of the jaw of the ancient human being - azikhantropos - was found; that population inhabited the locality 350-400 thousand years ago.
