The Human Development Index (HDI) is an indicator used by the UN to measure an individual country's overall level of development. It takes into account a number of the most important social and ecinomic factors which can reasonably measure the broad physical and intellectual well-being of a national population. These factors are: life expectancy, adult literacy, school enrolement and income per person. The index is calculated as a number between 0 and 1; higher numbers indicate a higher level of development; lower numbers indicate a lower level.
